Introduction

José Mário dos Santos Félix Mourinho (born 26 January 1963 in Setúbal) is a Portuguese football manager and the current manager of Real Madrid. He has the nickname "The Special One". Mourinho is widely regarded among experts, players and coaches, as one of the best coaches in football.

Mourinho started out as a player but he was unable to forge a meaningful career in the game and eventually switched to management. After spells working as an assistant manager and a youth team coach in the early 1990s, he became an interpreter for Sir Bobby Robson. There he worked with him at Sporting Clube de Portugal and Porto in Portugal, before following him to Spanish club Barcelona. He remained in the Catalonian club after Robson's departure and worked with the successor, Louis van Gaal.
He began focusing on coaching and impressed with brief but successful managerial periods at Benfica and União de Leiria. He returned to Porto in 2002, this time as head coach, winning the Primeira Liga, Taça de Portugal, and UEFA Cup in 2003. In 2004 Mourinho guided the team to the top of the league for a second time and won the highest honour in European club football, the UEFA Champions League.

Mourinho moved to Chelsea the following year and won two consecutive Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006. He often courted controversy for his outspokenness, but his victories at Chelsea and Porto established him as one of the world's top football managers.

In mid-2008 he moved to Italy's Serie A, signing a three-year contract with Internazionale. Within three months he had won his first Italian honour, the Supercoppa Italiana, and completed his first season in Italy by winning the Serie A league title. Mourinho followed on from that the next season by winning the first treble in Italian history, the Serie A league title, Coppa Italia, and the UEFA Champions League, thus becoming the third manager in football history to win two UEFA Champions League with two different teams, after Ernst Happel and Ottmar Hitzfeld. Due to these achievements he won the first ever FIFA Ballon d'Or Best Coach Award in 2010.

On 28 May 2010, his appointment as head coach at Real Madrid was confirmed, signing a four-year contract. His first honour with the team was winning the 2011 Copa del Rey Final, Real Madrid's first since 1993.

Mourinho's big break came when he took over Porto in January 2002. In his two and a half years at the club, he won 2 Primeira Ligas, a Taça de Portugal, a UEFA Cup and a UEFA Champions League. Tactically, this was the most simple of the Portuguese managers sides, but the key to the philosophy here was the ability to act as a unit. The defensive line played high up the pitch, often springing the offside trap. The central midfield three worked as a solid unit, all tracking back to defend where necessary. Deco was the playmaker, and the most important attacking player, making the links between the midfield and strike force (which Mourinho rotated depending on the opposition). This side has been painted as extremely defensive, when in fact it was just a side that worked as a unit to upset the best teams in Europe, well-drilled in adapting to whatever situation arose.

N.B. Mourinho later used this with Internazionale from his arrival up until January 2010.

The next step for the special one was a trip to London to manager Chelsea where, funded by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, he managed to win two Premier League titles, two League Cups & one FA Cup in just over three years at the club. It was here that he started to gain a reputation as a defensive orientated manager, although at times his counter attacking football was the envy of the rest of England. The defensive line was much deeper than at Porto, although the full-backs were still given licence to roam up the pitch as Cole/Wright-Phillips & Robben/Duff cut inside swapping between on the wings to draw opposing full backs. The central midfield contained the famous midfield V, with Makelele playing the role named after himself and Essien another defensive option to give Lampard licence to roam forward and swap Drogba up front. As a whole this Chelsea team had a more one-dimensional playing style, although it was this philosophy that saw them only lose 1 game in the League during the 2004/05 season, dropping only 2 points at home the following season.

Mourinho's latest triumphes have been at Inter & Real using the 4-2-3-1 formation, which to an extent is just an update of the 4-3-3 (although there are some important distinctions). While the defensive layout remains much the same, the midfield & strike force receives a large revamp. While the more defensive central midfielder moves back into a defensive midfield slot, the attacking players (Ozil & Sneijder) play an almost trequartista-esque role in attacking midfield. The wingers are inverted, so as to favour shooting ahead of crossing, with the Didier Drogba target man replaced by Diego Milito's finishing prowess. There is also the distinction in terms of a change in defensive style: While the team presses much harder, they are easier on tackling, allowing the opposition to hold the ball in their own half without too much pressure.
